BUSN 319 Course Project

A+ Creating a Marketing Plan

A Mobile APP – Daily Priorities

Objectives

The Course Project gives students the opportunity to synthesize all of the concepts in the BUSN319 Marketing course (in a team environment) in a comprehensive marketing plan for a new product (a good or service), and summarize that plan in a professional presentation. This approach enables students to combine functional expertise based on their own work experience and field of study.

Team Participation and Meetings

During the first week of the course, your instructor will divide the class into teams of three to four students. Project teams will be randomly generated, and students will not be allowed to change teams. However, please note that your instructor may remove students from teams for lack of participation, and those students will be required to complete the entire paper and presentation as an individual.

Your active participation as a member of your team is essential, not only in building your understanding of marketing, but also in learning how to contribute to a team. This project simulates a real-word, professional setting. At work, if you are an employee who is proactive, meets deadlines, and seeks opportunities to contribute, you are much more likely to keep your job and grow professionally. In contrast, if you are an employee who is reactive, misses deadlines, and contributes only what is required, you will be considered expendable. Group dynamics can be challenging, so be sure to do your part to ensure that your team performs well.

Meetings

Students are encouraged to collaborate on their own using the group tools within the learning system; however, if you have questions for your professor they will be happy to answer them via e-mail or in a live (virtual) session. If you need a live session, it is recommended to arrange this with your professor no later than Week 2.

Introduction

Product innovation and marketing are the only enduring competitive advantages that companies can use to survive and thrive in the marketplace. A marketing plan is a guide for those product innovations and marketing activities for a specified period of time, typically about 5 years. Marketing plans are used internally to guide marketing activities, or they can be used to communicate with external audiences to raise capital.

There are important things to consider as the plan is created.

  1. Is the marketing idea valid?
  2. What is unique or distinctive about the product that separates it from competitors?
  3. Does a viable market exist for the product?
  4. Is the target market large enough, accessible, and capable of purchasing your product?
  5. Are the financial projections sound?
  6. Is the management team competent?
  7. How will investors get a return on their investments?

In order to help you answer these and similar questions, create your marketing plan utilizing the following course resources.

  • Building an Effective Marketing Plan located in Appendix A of your textbook
  • Financial Aspects of Marketing located in Appendix B of your textbook
  • View the marketing plan outline

Guidelines

Paper

Use an online document sharing solution to work collaboratively with your teammates to write the marketing plan. Your final marketing plan must be 15–20 pages (minimum five pages per team member) in length, cover all sections of the marketing plan outline, use at least three research sources other than your textbook, and follow all APA guidelines. In Week 1, your team will submit a two-page topic proposal for instructor approval. In Week 4, your team will submit a substantial draft of your marketing plan for instructor feedback. Your team’s final marketing plan is due at the end of Week 7.

Presentation

Use a multimedia tool of your choosing in Canvas to work collaboratively with you teammates to create an online presentation that summarizes your team’s paper and would be appropriate to present to a company’s board of directors or investors. The presentation must include an introduction slide, a sufficient number of body slides to summarize the paper’s content, and a references slide. Pay particular attention to the accurate citation of research sources, and be sure to cite any data, images, charts, graphs, and so forth used on the slides. Your team’s presentation is due at the end of Week 7.

Milestones

BUSN 319 Course Project Topic Proposal (20 points)

“A Mobile APP – Daily Priorities”

During Week 1, your team will select a topic for the marketing plan, and thereafter, all related assignments (the draft in Week 4 and the final marketing plan in Week 7) must be on that same topic. You may not change your marketing plan topic without approval from your instructor.

Your topic must be for a new product (a good or service). Because this is an applied project and not a research paper, please be creative and do not select a new product for a large brand, such as Starbucks. If you are interested in coffee, for example, consider your own bistro as your topic and then use information from companies like Starbucks or Seattle’s Best Coffee for ideas and competitive research as you work on your project.

For Week 1, collaboratively write a two-page description of your product, including the following.

  1. Information about ownership and company structure
  2. A description of product
  3. A mission statement
  4. Marketing goals
  5. Who a typical customer might be

Each team member must submit a copy of the Topic Proposal to the Week 1: Course Project Topic Proposal Upload module in Canvas for grading by your instructor.

Daily Priorities will be owned by a team of people, that is, the members of the project team. They will be equal partners in this initiative.
