Selling Your Team’s Service to CanGo – 28 Pages

As a team of management consultants, your job is to persuade CanGo to purchase your services to help them correct their management issues.  Tell us your Team Name, identify your individual team members and give us some idea of the individual strengths you bring to this picture.

One of the great examples in this exercise has already been the value of active listening (or on this case active reading).  When you see people already list a skill, adding to that skills adds no value.  Active reading (like active listening) means you understand what’s covered and where you can step in and add value….

Missions, Vision & Values – 36 Pages

How does a corporation determine what direction they will take in the marketplace? The first three elements of setting this direction are Mission Vision and Value Statements. What do these mean? How do they impact decision-making at a corporation?

mission statement is a concise explanation of the organization’s reason for existence. It describes the organization’s purpose and its overall intention. The mission statement supports the vision and serves to communicate purpose and direction to employees, customers, vendors and other stakeholders.

vision statement looks forward and creates a mental image of the ideal state that the organization wishes to achieve. It is inspirational and aspirational and should challenge employees. Questions to consider when drafting vision statements might include:…

Planning a Technological Solution

  • Nick has been handed a project where he has to implement Online Gaming, requiring significant technological integration. What factors does he need to consider and manage for the project to be a success?

Cost/Benefit Analysis

  • What are the costs of the new systems that may be implemented? How do we justify their implementation at CanGo?

Which other functions within the organization does Nick to involve in this project?  Does Nick have the necessary skill sets for this challenge?  Also, going from offline gaming (which is very dated) to online what types of challenges are presented in terms of technology?

Here are the top five challenges to online gaming.

Speed-to-market – Increased competition can threaten your competitive advantage, making speed-to-market a critical factor. To address this challenge, online game production teams are making use of on-demand computing and storage infrastructure. Public cloud and dedicated servers offer ideal solutions for studios that need to quickly spin up computing resources for development, testing, beta and launch cycles.  Availability – If there’s one thing that strikes

In this discussion, one person each team will provide an update on their team project based on Week 1 in the form of a VoiceThread (3- 5 minutes). The VoiceThread must be posted no later than the second day of the week.

We reviewed each other’s strengths and weaknesses and identified who would be skilled at what areas, relative to the expected needs of our project.

We added times when we were available, as well as times we were not available, so there was no miscommunication ahead of time.

We communicated and updated various points with each member having valuable input about where we would be able to add value to the project, along with delineating each other’s expectations.

Are you gaining anything from the voice threads that you might not from written updates?  Have you had an opportunity to develop a weekly schedule?  Which stage would you say your team is in now and what is its next step?…

Flow Charting Process – 31 Pages

Jack shows us a flow chart of the new warehouse system this week. What does a flow chart tell us? How can we use that information?  Regarding these symbols used in flow charts, many people may not be familiar with their use and meaning. Can a legend be included with the flow chart so that they are easier understood?  Flow charts are obviously very visual but not all of us are visual learners. Do we need other options for process, design, diagnostics, training, etc.?

Do you also need to quantify the risk/reward relationship?

A flowchart is just a map, really, a guide to how you’re going to proceed over the course of your project. To best implement it you need the right tools. With the right PM software features, you’re able to better plan, implement, monitor and close your project, and follow the flow chart. For example, with a real-time dashboard, you can track a project as it progresses through your planned flowchart.
Project managers use a flowchart to offer a clear picture of the process and find ways to improve project efficiency. A flow chart displays graphically the project’s objective and seeks to more…

Class, on this topic of teammate issues (without naming any names) what are some constructive ways to handle conflict and resolution?

Conflict resolution is a very important part about being a leader and a good teammate. There will never be a situation that everyone will see eye to eye. Not everyone will give 100% every project or every day. To ensure efficiency and…

Organizational Structures – 34 Pages

Let’s discuss the differences between groups and teams.  How do we convert a group to a team?  What benefits might come from this conversion in a business environment?

Today, employers are using employees more and more in a matrixed environment. What does that mean? How can we contend with the various stressors in such an environment? How do we manage expectations up for various projects?

Is it up to management or the employee to set priorities?  What might be the driving force be behind a group that eventually forms into a team?  How would you classify our efforts here and in your teamwork together considering groups and teams?

A group can be a random bunch of people that have something in common and are put together.  They do not necessarily have to work together.  A team is a group of people that have a purpose together.  When we first started our class, we were set into groups.  We knew we had to do this project but did not know each other or our work styles.  Over the past few weeks, we became a team as we started to work together.  We have the same purpose, rules, and communication.

Mixed environments involve more than one reporting line.  For example, an individual from a functional department may be involved in a project.  In this case, they are reporting to their functional manager as well as the project manager.  For this environment to function there must be clear and active communication among the managers and with the employees.  Additionally, both managers must work together to ensure the employee has the time to work in both areas as needed…

Recording for other team members is a great idea! Keeping notes is always good for continuity for teams to refer to so when there are questions it is in writing. I have used the GroupMe app for small group bible studies but never for class. That is another way to overcome the challenge of limited amount of people that can be on a group text. Really good ideas thanks for sharing.

Performance Review Session – 35 Pages

Click Here: BUSN460 Performance Review Session Discussions

Let’s talk about the performance review Nick received from Warren. Would you accept the review if you were Nick? What would you want to be different and why?

Do you think it might have been helpful had Nick prepared a self-evaluation prior to the meeting?  We generally seem to agree that we would not have accepted this review from Warren if we were in Nick’s place. Has anyone encountered a similar situation? If so, how did you react?  Did budget constraints have anything to do with percentage increase?

Let’s talk about the format of this performance appraisal process for a moment. I mentioned elsewhere here the prospect of a self-evaluation. How about a 360 degree process? Is anyone familiar with this?  How does one verify the accuracy of all of the feedback and data?

Personally I wouldn’t accept that review. It’s a bit too informal and doesn’t address any issues. Performance reviews are made to show what you’re doing well vs. what you’re doing poorly so that you can improve or continue doing good work. The performance review given by Warren is essentially an unhelpful pat on the back and could result in Nick getting fired by not addressing the issues he’s had in the past, leading him to continue thinking that its okay to indulge in that type of behavior. Feedback is crucial in everything, especially work. I’d rather work hard and continue to improve than accept that I’m the best I can be already…

What other points in the process during the week do you also see as being important?  What challenges has your team encountered over the first few weeks and how did you overcome them?

Sometimes the writer’s block can seem intimidating and can effectively hinder any positive momentum you had going while writing your assignment. One of the key things that helps me get around a writer’s block is to try and thing more about what I want to say in the paper rather than how I’m trying to say it. In this instance it actually favors function over form which is usually the opposite…

Corporate Decision Making – 30 Pages

CanGo is looking at ways to grow its business. How should they approach the decision on how to do it?  When making recommendations, how do we assign weights to criteria? Is it always based strictly on logic and achieving the best quantitative result and why?

You are the company’s consultant. How would you advise it in terms of its mission, goals and objectives?  When you refer to lifestyles are you attempting to define the company’s target market segments?  How should CanGo keep abreast of its competitive landscape?  In addition to the CBA does there also need to be an ROI requirement set?

We can look at their financial statements and ask where is their current strength?  I remember someone telling me once that the best predictor for future behavior is current behavior, so if a company doesn’t have a major strength, how it can leverage anything?  If it has a major strength, it can apply the underlying system to expansion, if it needs to.  While we all tend to forget this, Amazon started out as a book company.  It’s amazing to think about how they’ve grown when they were simply a book company back in the day.  It’s funny to think of a company that competed with Barnes and Nobles is now competing with Walmart…

The google document system is an ideal way to collaborate on a single document with multiple editors. This is a very useful tool if you’re fortunate enough to….

Corporate Ethics and Social Responsibility – 33 Pages

Click Here: BUSN460 Corporate Ethics and Social Responsibility

Corporate Ethics tactics and operating a business in an ethical manner takes time, effort and commitment. What are the key elements to a company having successful organizational ethics? What can we do as managers to encourage ethical behavior and to raise ethical standards in our organizations?

There is sometimes a perceived conflict between earning profit and being responsible. What should CanGo do about adding violent games to their product mix? What impact might this have on the various stakeholders for the company? Why might the perception that profits can’t mix with responsibility be false? How does this affect CanGo’s decision whether to sell games with violent content?

How do establish these values as a common thread when we have a diverse staff of varied cultures, values, etc.?  Does the ethics of an organization also relate to its vision and/or mission statement?  What are some measures an organization can take for encouraging reporting of violations without fears of retribution?

Ethical behavior means keeping up the moral values intact and showing them by one’s own work and deeds. Even businesses with a strong ethical culture may find employee attitudes, behaviors and patterns of decision-making that could be improved. One key to changing employee attitudes and behaviors is to be the best example yourself, since employees need to see how well you practice the expectations set forth in your code of ethics.  Another key to establishing a company’s ethical policy is having a strong company code of conduct. Beyond that, there are a number of measures you can take to improve your organization’s ethical climate…
