A Clint Eastwood quote states, “Respect your efforts, respect yourself. Self-respect leads to self-discipline. When you have both firmly under your belt, that’s real power.” What do you think that he means by this? What does this quote mean to you? The second sentence in Clint Eastwood’s quote to be key – “self-respect leads to self-discipline” – let’s talk first about self-respect – what is it? I think it involves at least four things that I’d like to share … To me, self-respect is the ability to:

  • Raise above all disappointments, neglects and setbacks in life (you know they will happen – how are you going to handle them? Emotionally or logically?)
  • Know our real self without any prejudice (we all have faults – ignoring them won’t make them go away – our best recourse is acknowledge them and work toward change)
  • Strengthen our willpower through self- discipline with a motive to control emotions (if you have the ability to understand your emotions and be aware that others may not be able to, that’s a strength that you have to leverage)
  • Exercise control over our thoughts (constantly worrying about things that may or may not happen detracts from an effort to focus on what you want to accomplish)…
