In the 19th century, the camera was a revolutionary invention. Did the invention of the camera change the arts? Why or why not? Is there a relationship between movements such as realism and impressionism and the camera? Photography, in itself, is an art form that takes practice, patience, and skill. What do you think? How would a photograph affect a painter?

The camera affected the painters by showing the beauty in reality. The camera could look at things from a different angle than the abilities of the naked-eye. This technological advancement pushed the painters to make a vivid picture and accurate painting. I would also think that it made it difficult to find work once the camera became popular. For this week’s discussion, choose realism or impressionism as a basis for your posts and discuss how your choice is manifested in any area of the humanities (i.e., painting, sculpture, literature, music, etc.), and give an example from any discipline in the humanities to illustrate how realism or impressionism influenced the work of art. Please be sure to give an analysis of how the work of art was influenced by the movement. What made you choose one over the other, Realism or Impressionism?

I chose realism because the below picture caught my attention. While Impressionism has its beauty of depicting a typical moment in a whimsical and dreamy way the Realism movement showed reality in a sometimes brutal way. The below picture is from the Met Museum’s Realism Art. At first glance I thought it might be a picture of a drunken man on the floor but a closer look shows four bodies, including that of an infant under the man. I immediately felt emotion and anger for what happened in the picture. Then to realize that it was based on something that happened it made me sick. I feel that the artist was trying to show revolt against the government and show the utter disgusting affects that had on an innocent family and murdering them in their peaceful sleep…
