Professional sports is a huge money maker.
How does technology support this? Research this topic in the DeVry online Library (and elsewhere); please include the links to where you found the information that you are discussing.

Some ideas to get you started include high-tech stadiums, RFID on players, social media, and big data.

So, how does technology support professional sports today?   What are the benefits?   What is different from a decade ago?

Collaboration
What are some of the tools and technologies available that support a team-oriented, collaborative culture?
Many are discussed in Chapter 2 of our text (pp.61-64).  Select ONE and discuss its pros and cons.

Can you identify examples of companies, e.g., sports teams and others, that embrace a technology.  What do they do that fosters innovation?

How is this different from traditional teamwork? Does your company have, or might it consider, any kind of sponsorship or other financial involvement with a major league sports team or athletes? If so, you likely want to investigate ways to protect that investment.

One option is provided through a specialized service of PricewaterhouseCoopers. The sports group’s highest-profile service involves vetting potential draft picks, largely for professional football and basketball. Other clients include hockey and American soccer teams.

By looking at a player’s ecosystem, the team can see if the player has wider negative influences than just his own misconduct. Another aspect of the profile is based on social media content. What do a player’s tweets and other social media posts say about him?

PWC has powerful data aggregation tools that dramatically categorize and break down social media content. Is a particular player, say, abusive toward women? Does he glamorize the misuse of drugs? And what are the other people in the player’s ecosystem saying about him? What kind of other content are they putting out about him? Are there photos of the player at big frat parties engaged in illicit activities?

Retailing giants!

Read the case study at the end of Chapter 3 of your text: Who’s The World’s Top Retailer? Walmart and Amazon Duke It Out (Laudon, 2015, pp.116-118).

To start, analyze Walmart.com and Amazon.com using the competitive forces and value chain models.  (NOTE: We’ll examine both of these tools in later subthreads (B and C).

Porter ?

What is Porter’s competitive forces model (Laudon, 2015, pp.94-96)?  Select ONE component of the model and discuss it.  How does technology impact that component of the model?  Identify your selection in the post subject line.

What types of purchases – major capital expenditure or simply supplying your household inventory? Has technology packaging and accessibility reduced or eliminated the traditional ‘economies of scale’ argument of the large, established industry participants?  For example, Tesla Motors or General Motors?

OR a regional, mid-sized retailer or restaurant compared to large, national or international chains?

Competitive forces model (AMAZON):

– Existing competitors: Brick-and-mortar stores, as well as existing online retailers will continue to put pressure on Amazon. Competitor rivalry will be even more intense.

– New market entrants: eBay, Yahoo!, and Google are all attempting to take market space from Amazon. The Internet makes it easier for competitors to enter the market and it offers them very low barriers to entry. Competitive rivalry has become much more intense.

– Substitute products and services: Products and services being offered by Amazon can be easily duplicated and offered by competitors. This makes it easy for rivals to compete.

– Customers: Amazon customers have a lot of power in that they can easily switch to competitors. Amazon and its competitors all operate in a transparent marketplace where there is little product differentiation. Customers can easily find the lowest-cost provider on the Web.

– Suppliers: Amazon’s suppliers can have a significant impact on profits. This becomes even more crucial as more companies enter the online retail marketing. Amazon’s suppliers may exercise greater force over Amazon as they are in a position to enter lucrative deals with other online retail competitors such as eBay and Yahoo!

AMAZON report card

How does it provide value to its customers?   Do you think Amazon can continue to be successful?

To summarize Amazon’s experience, they continuously seek new and innovative ways to expand and build upon its product offerings. They have been extremely innovative in their business strategy and have invested heavily in information systems.  They are a strong contender to provide business cloud computing services.

Amazon provides value to its retail customers by making it an easy place to shop. The one-click experience is pleasurable, and customers continue to realize significant cost savings over traditional shopping. Over the years, Amazon has been very successful in building a very large and loyal customer base that are willing to pay a premium for access.

The Kindle has been, by most measures successful.  It is changing the book market.  In 2011 they introduced an Amazon ‘tablet’, the Kindle Fire.  More recently, additional, aggressively priced models of the Kindle have been introduced.  To me, these were a ‘risky’ move, but they have not asked for my advice and I have not studied their recent financials.

Amazon released a smartphone (struggling) and TV service (Fire stick) to the market – were those wise decisions?

Their most recent product is the Echo – here’s a look at how they portray it – over 3 million sold! http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-SK705DI-Echo/dp/B00X4WHP5E

How would Porter evaluate Amazon TODAY?

American Water keeps data flowing (Users and database design)

Read the interactive session: Management: American Water Keeps Data Flowing (Laudon, 2015, pp.243-244).  What roles did the end users and information systems specialists play in the systems transformation project?  Were they appropriate?

Database capabilities?

What are the 3 capabilities a data base management system must have?

Select ONE from our text and describe it …. What does this capability provide?

Consider your position in your firm – are you (would you be) able to represent your discipline (department, division, organizational entity) on a task force to define the data base requirements for the unit?

-vendor/supplier data

-new business reports

Briefly describe the process used in designing a database.
What are some of the reasons that moving to a database environment is such a costly, long-term process?

The company is a regional firm with a main office of about 100 people and a dozen sales offices of about 10-15 people in each. They are exploring a new HR database system to replace a series of home grown ‘systems’.

Does big data bring big rewards?

Read the case study (Laudon, 2015, pp.249-251) regarding data value.
Identify a firm in the case (or from your own experience) that has received ‘big rewards’ or ‘big losses’ from their data investment and discuss their good (or bad) results.

What types of databases are used by companies like Google in implementing worldwide search engines? How Do Search Engines Determine Importance? What are the challenges large, and even mid-sized companies have today in managing their data?

What is the impact of ‘bad’ data or ‘poor’ data quality on a business? Example ?  Do you have an example that you can share where ‘bad data’ has caused a significant problem?  What is the impact of data quality problems on the gov’ts databases?  What steps would you suggest to resolve some of the problems?…

Information systems security threats (Section 8.1, pp.305-318)

Why are information systems vulnerable to destruction, error, and abuse? What are the most common threats against information systems?  In addition to phishing, what are some other threats we face from malicious software, hackers, and computer crime?  Select ONE item, identify it and suggest a defense against it.

System vulnerability and abuse

Major corporations, governments, and other organizations are hacked each week, mostly by means of phishing attacks.
Describe how users and IT organizations should arm themselves against these attacks

What antivirus protection do you use? Are you satisfied with it? Would you recommend it?

Class, what do you use to protect yourself?  Is part of it your process for evaluating / filtering emails? Is it commercial software?  If so, will you identify it?  Would you recommend it to others?

Discuss the issue of security challenges on the Internet as that issue applies to the global enterprise. What are some of these security challenges? Also, several of you chose to pursue cloud computing technologies in your Course Project.  Did you address security in your report to management?

We’ve all read about information systems that did not work as expected.  However, most systems, especially those being built today, have an established set of controls.  Table 8-4 in our text (Laudon, 2015, p. 321) identifies six types of controls.  To your knowledge, are all implemented in your firm?

If you can separate them, which ONE would you consider most important?  Why?
