Psychological Research – 63 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-psychological-research-discussions/

The text gives seven major perspectives in modern psychology. These perspectives are based on observations of how people think, feel, and act. Select a perspective that you think best explains human behavior and evaluate it for strengths and weaknesses.

This week we will be focusing our attention on and discussing the following Terminal Course Objectives (TCO’s) as they relate to the Science of Psychology: (1) Psychology’s Four Main Goals; (2) Major Perspectives In Psychology; (3) Scientific Method; (4) Research Methods; and (5) Ethics in Psychology (Ciccarelli & White, 2015).

TCO 1 (Given a contemporary research question or issue in the social sciences, such as the question of whether obesity can be linked to mood and anxiety disorders, assess the key theoretical perspectives related to the problem or issue and select the perspectives that best address the problem or issue)

TCO 2 (Given an intellectual, scientific research question that investigates human behavior and mental processes, apply the empirical approach of the social sciences in order to define, analyze, and formulate answers that may support various solutions to the problem)

To get us started, let’s consider and respond to the following questions (also shown above):

Biological Foundations – 51 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-biological-foundations/

An ongoing debate continues on the influence of nature and nurture on human behavior. If you had to argue that either genetics (nature) or environment (nurture) has the greater impact on human development, which would you pick and why?

This week we have two graded topic areas. In this second threaded discussion area we will review the Biological Perspective (Ciccarelli & White, 2015) as it relates to Terminal Course Objective 3:

TCO 3 (Given any case involving possible biological causes for someone’s behavior, such as a substance abuse problem, brain injury, or unusual behavior, analyze the biological foundations of behavior and provide physiological explanations for changes in the person’s behavior, emotions, perceptions, and thoughts)

Let’s begin by responding to the following questions (also listed above):

An on-going debate continues on the influence of nature and nurture on human behavior. If you had to argue that either genetics (nature) or environment (nurture) has the greater impact on human development, which would you pick, and why?

Sensation and Perception – 54 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-sensation-perception/

Sensation and perception are two different processes. Does sensory stimulus shape our perceptions? Do our perceptions misinterpret our sensations? How does that happen?

In Week 2 we have two graded topic areas. In this first threaded discussion area we will analyze Sensation and Perception (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 90-130) as these topics relate to Terminal Course Objective 4:

TCO 4 (Given a particular work or interpersonal situation, such as discussing with co-workers the problems within a department or talking to friends about the accuracy of an umpire’s call in a baseball game, describe the ways different people might perceive the same situation and indicate how perception may affect their beliefs about and reactions to the situation).

Let’s begin by responding to the following (also listed above):

Sensation and perception are two different processes (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 90-130)
1. Does sensory stimulus shape our perceptions?
2. Do our perceptions misinterpret our sensations?
3. How does 1 and 2 above happen? Please use concrete examples to help bolster your logic.

Consciousness – 58 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/consciousness-discussions-week-2/

How important is sleep to your overall functioning throughout the day? What are you doing to ensure that you get a good night’s sleep?

This week in this first threaded discussion area we will analyze and discuss “Consciousness” [(1) Consciousness; (2) Sleep; (3) Dreaming; (4) Sleep Disorders; (5) Hypnosis; and (6) Psychoactive Drugs and Addiction (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 134-168)] as these subjects relate to Terminal Course Objective 5:

TCO 5 (Given a fellow student, family member, or employee who is having difficulty paying attention or is looking for ways to relax or become more self-aware, analyze the factors that affect consciousness, alertness, and self-awareness).

Let’s begin this discussion by responding to the following questions:

(1) How important is sleep to your overall functioning throughout the day?
(2) What are you doing to ensure that you get a good night’s sleep?

Learning and Memory and Intelligence Discussions Week 3

Learning – 57 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/learning-discussions-week-3/

After you have read about the theories of learning, reflect on how you learned as a child. What methods did your parents use to teach you how to act? Was it through classical conditioning? What about operant conditioning and social learning theory? Which theory had the biggest impact? Why? Give an example and state how it has impacted the person you are today.

This week our Terminal Course Objectives are 7 and 8:

TCO 7 (Given a task such as training a new employee in a specific job skill, encouraging more socially appropriate behaviors, or encouraging recall of previously learned information, apply the principles of learning to develop a plan for increasing desired behaviors and reducing or eliminating undesirable behaviors or for comprehending material)

TCO 8 (Given an individual who either struggles academically or maintains high academic achievement levels, assess the potential effectiveness of IQ tests or “culture fair” intelligence tests for indicating the reasons for the person’s performance)

In the first graded thread we are going to converse and have many insightful discussions on Classical Conditioning, Operant Conditioning, Cognitive Learning and Social Learning/Observational Learning (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 176-212).

Before we tackle the discussion questions, let’s first form a strong foundation by defining Learning and Conditioning (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, p. 176).

After you have read about the theories of learning (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 176-212), reflect on how you learned as a child. Next, answer the following questions: (1) What methods did your parents use to teach you how to act?; (2) Was is through classical conditioning (pp. 176-186)?; (3) What about operant conditioning (pp. 187-204) and observational learning (pp. 209-212)?; (4) Which theory had the biggest impact? Why?; and (5) Give an example(s) and state how it has impacted the person you are today .

All – let’s continue this great momentum we have going in the course. The Week 1 and 2 threaded discussions have been excellent and I’m looking forward to an even better Week 3.

Memory and Intelligence – 45 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-memory-intelligence/

We all seem to want a good memory (What are my coworkers names? Where did I leave my computer? What day was I supposed to submit that proposal to my boss?). These might be typical memory issues. After reading about memory and intelligence, what is your most valuable tip for the class in improving your ability to remember things?

This week our Terminal Course Objectives are 7 and 8. In this second graded threaded discussion area we will converse on the topics of (1) Memory; (2) Forgetting; (3) Biological Bases of Memory; (4) Memory Distortions; and (5) Intelligence (Ciccarelli & White, 2015).

Motivation and Emotion – 55 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-motivation-emotion/

From your reading, you have seen that there are several theories of motivation. You may also sense that some of the theories may not specifically apply to you. Given that introduction, which theory of motivation is the best fit for describing your behavior?

During Week 4, in this first Discussion Forum, we will review and discuss Motivation and Emotion (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 252-283) as they relate to Terminal Course Objective 9 and 11:

TCO 9 (Given a friend who is lacking drive to succeed, or a colleague who is going through varying levels of involvement in, and commitment to, his/her goals, analyze the situation with regards to the factors that influence existing motivational levels, and develop a framework for improving such motivational levels).

TCO 11 (Given a need to understand, explain, and interpret someone’s behavior, examine the development, structure, and functioning of personality and compare and contrast the major theories, including the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each approach).

Without looking at any reference material (e.g., your textbook), define “Motivation”. In essence, what does motivation mean to you?

Theories of Personality – 51 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-theories-personality/

Theories of personality are based on observations of how humans develop behavior patterns. Psychological testing assumes there are certain fixed aspects of human personality and those aspects can be identified through standardized measurements. As part of your application for a position, you may be administered one of these tests to determine if you are a good fit for the company. The Big Five personality trait assessment is in your Webliography. Take this assessment and comment on (1) its accuracy for you and (2) which of those traits may change over time.

In this second graded threaded discussion area, we will take an in-depth look at Personality by discussing how Personality Theories (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 502-524) relate to Terminal Course Objective 9 and 11:

TCO 9 (Given a friend who is lacking drive to succeed, or a colleague who is going through varying levels of involvement in, and commitment to, his/her goals, analyze the situation with regards to the factors that influence existing motivational levels, and develop a framework for improving such motivational levels).

TCO 11 (Given a need to understand, explain, and interpret someone’s behavior, examine the development, structure, and functioning of personality and compare and contrast the major theories, including the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each approach).

First, in your own words, define the “Big Five” Theory of Personality (O.C.E.A.N.; Ciccarelli & White, 2015, p. 520) – again, please remember that if you put content from an external source into your own words (paraphrasing), you still have to cite that content.

Theories of personality are based on observations of how humans develop behavior patterns. Psychological testing assumes there are certain fixed aspects of human personality and those aspects can be identified through standardized measurements. As part of your application for a position, you may be administered one of these tests to determine if you are a good fit for the company.

Physical, Cognitive and Social Development – 55 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/phys-cognitive-social-development/

Human development is a process in which there are various cognitive, physical, social, and emotional milestones from conception to death, all of which require mastery. Our discussion begins with an exploration of physical development. All stages are essential for development, however, if you had to rank the importance of these physical stages, which would you rank as most important? Please provide an explanation to support your answer.

In the first graded thread in Week 5, we are going to converse and have many insightful discussions on Physical, Cognitive, Emotional, Personality, Social and Moral Development (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 306-347), as each relate to Terminal Course Objective 10 and 11:

TCO 10 (Given a child who is lagging in motor and language skills, an adolescent struggling with an identity crisis, or an older adult confronting issues related to retirement, assess how research on development and the major developmental theories might explain and help someone cope with these issues)

TCO 11 (Given a need to understand, explain, and interpret someone’s behavior, examine the development, structure, and functioning of personality and compare and contrast the major theories, including the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each approach)

Students who actively participate in the weekly threaded discussions tend to do extremely well on the weekly assignments. So as always, I expect to see everyone continue to work hard in the threads and reach their weekly posting requirements of 3 high value posts on 3 separate days starting no later than Wednesday of each week.

Before we tackle the discussion questions, let’s first form a strong foundation by defining Developmental Psychology (see Ciccarelli & White, 2015, p. 306).

Next, answer the following questions: Human development is a process in which there are various physical, cognitive, emotional, personality, social, and moral milestones from conception to death (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 306-347), all of which require mastery. Our discussion begins with an exploration of physical development. All stages are essential for development, however, if you had to rank the importance of these physical stages [e.g., prenatal development (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 312-316) or postnatal development (e.g., reflexes, motor, brain (p. 317), etc.], which would you rank as most important? Please provide an explanation to support your answer.

Sexuality and Gender – 47 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-sexuality-gender/

Understanding sexuality varies from culture to culture, yet there are basic biological, cognitive, and emotional components in sexuality and sexual development. A good starting point in understanding our topic this week will be to explore the issues of sexual identity and gender role. What is the difference between the two and what are some examples of sexual identity and gender roles?

In this second graded threaded discussion area for Week 5, we will explore the subjects of Sexuality and Gender (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 336-415), as each relate to Terminal Course Objective 10 and 11.

Stress – 52 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-stress-week-6/

We are exploring the nature of stress, its effect on human functioning, and techniques to minimize stress. What is the biggest source of stress you have in your life? What is the most effective technique you have used to handle it?

This week we have two graded topic areas. In this first threaded discussion area we will review Stress as it relates to Terminal Course Objective 6:

TCO 6 (Given an account of a stressful personal or professional situation, identify the sources of the stress, evaluate the impact of the stressors, and identify several stress management techniques appropriate for the situation).

Let’s begin by responding to the following questions (also listed above):

  1. What is the biggest source of stress [stressor(s)] you have in your life (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 421-429)?
  2. What is the most effective technique you have used to handle it (also see Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 445-449)?

As you know it takes everyone involved to create meaningful discussions so beginning this week, I would like to see each student respond to at least three other student posts in the threads. I look forward to reading your posts and your continued interaction with one another in the threads. Now let’s get started!

Social Psychology – 57 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-social-psychology-discussions/

Why is it that some people will blame others for their misfortunes yet excuse themselves of responsibility when they fail? Explain the fundamental attribution error and the self-serving bias and offer some suggestions as to how to avoid those errors.

In this second threaded discussion area we will explore and converse on “Social Psychology” [(1) Attribution Theory; (2) Attitudes (3) Conformity; (4) Obedience; (5) Group Processes; (6) Prejudice and Discrimination; (7) Interpersonal Attraction; (8) Aggression; and (9) Prosocial Behavior/Altruism (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 452-495)] as this subject relates to Terminal Course Objective 13:

TCO 13 (Given a situation depicting social influence, such as pressure to conform to a group, demands for obedience to an authority figure, or the persuasive effects of a commercial, assess the impact and extent of such influence on the behavior of those depicted and on people generally).

Let’s begin this discussion by having each of you define/explain “Attributions” (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, p. 473) in your own words.

Next, please respond to the following questions:

(1) Why is it that some people will blame others for their misfortunes yet excuse themselves of responsibility when they fail?
(2) Explain the fundamental attribution error (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 474-475) and the self-serving bias/actor-observer bias (p. 474) and offer some suggestions as to how to avoid those errors.

Psychological Disorders – 56 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-psychological-disorders/

Despite the best efforts of psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical researchers, psychological disorders appear to be as prevalent today as they ever were—if not more so. What might be the cause of this phenomenon? Inadequate genetic makeup? Inadequate parenting? Inadequate social structures? What is different in our culture today than in previous generations? Please provide support for your opinion.

This week in our first graded threaded discussion area we will have many knowledge enhancing conversations on the topic of “Psychological Disorders” (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 538-567) as they relate to our Terminal Course Objectives (TCO’s) 11 and 12:

TCO 11 (Given a need to understand, explain, and interpret someone’s behavior, examine the development, structure, and functioning of personality and compare and contrast the major theories including the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each approach).

TCO 12 (Given a situation pertaining to a person exhibiting abnormal or maladaptive thoughts/behaviors, analyze the possible biological and social causes of such behaviors, how they are diagnosed by mental health professionals, what type of treatment may be needed, and how society responds to people living with mental disorders).

Theories and Therapy – 48 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-theories-therapy/

At some point in your life you may think you need therapy. At some point in your life, you may think a coworker or a family member needs therapy. Should you find yourself in that situation, which type of therapy would you recommend for another person or yourself: psychoanalysis, cognitive, humanistic, group, behavioral, or biomedical (medication or surgery)? Why? (If you would recommend no treatment for yourself or a coworker, please explain your rationale for this.)

This week in our second graded threaded discussion area we will have many discussion enhancing conversations on the topic of “Therapy” (Ciccarelli & White, 2015, pp. 576-607) as it relates to Terminal Course Objectives (TCO’s) 11 and 12:

TCO 11 (Given a need to understand, explain, and interpret someone’s behavior, examine the development, structure, and functioning of personality and compare and contrast the major theories including the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each approach).

TCO 12 (Given a situation pertaining to a person exhibiting abnormal or maladaptive thoughts/behaviors, analyze the possible biological and social causes of such behaviors, how they are diagnosed by mental health professionals, what type of treatment may be needed, and how society responds to people living with mental disorders).

Psychological Research – 35 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-psychological-research/

The text gives seven major perspectives in modern psychology. These perspectives are based on observations of how people think, feel, and act. Select a perspective that you think best explains human behavior and evaluate it for strengths and weaknesses. What an inspiring attitude Lindsy. You are doing a terrific job of taking control of your future. Do you beleive this is because of strengths you inherited, you learned or you acquired in some other way?
For the record wise theorists if you support the environmental point of view (nurture) you are a “nurturist”. If you believe the greatest influences are those that are inherited (nature) you are a “naturist.” If you believe both heredity (nature) and environment (nurture) affect the way we behave what term would describe your beliefs?  Which of these perspectives do you find most valid? Why? One of the basic goals in humanistic psychology is to help people “self-actualize.” What exactly is “self-actualization”?…

Biological Foundations – 27 Pages

An ongoing debate continues on the influence of nature and nurture on human behavior. If you had to argue that either genetics (nature) or environment (nurture) has the greater impact on human development, which would you pick and why? What kind of characteristics or conditions are known to be generically induced? What kinds are environmentally created? How might these answers shape the future of the child of a serial killer? what is the difference between afferent and efferent neurons? What is the central nervous system?…

Sensation and Perception – 27 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-sensation-perception-discussions/

Sensation and perception are two different processes. Does sensory stimulus shape our perceptions? Do our perceptions misinterpret our sensations? How does that happen? Hello all! For this thread we expand our discussion to the way we view life ..ok big topic I know but I mean literally how we “see” things. To be clear, we are not discussing opinion or point of view; we are talking about how are eyes, ears, nose and other receptors send messages to the brain and how we use these messages to perceive our world.
You may choose to respond to the prompt above or you may respond to the following: Are our perceptions always accurate? Are your perceptions the same as someone else’s? What does your experience with these activities tell you about the ways differing perceptions might affect our reactions in social settings? What part of the brain controls what we see?…

Consciousness – 29 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-consciousness-discussions/

How important is sleep to your overall functioning throughout the day? What are you doing to ensure that you get a good night’s sleep? As students of psychology we find that analyzing the influence of one’s mental state on behavior and performance in situation is critical.
For example, people need a certain amount of sleep to function properly in society. People today are generally getting less sleep than their ancestors did one hundred years ago. What price do you see society paying for its lack of sleep? How does this impact your life? Can you explain the functions of the stages of sleep and classify the major sleep disorders in terms of their causes, effects, and available treatment options? Would one of our alert students define this term and tell us more about how it relates to sleep?…

What about operant conditioning and social learning theory? Which theory had the biggest impact? Why? Give an example and state how it has impacted the person you are today.
Learned psychologists let’s consider this, this week we begin talking about some of the forces that shaped who you are …this is a big topic. Let’s begin with the basics please define one of the following: classical conditioning, operant conditioning or social learning theory (parents you will want to pay attention to the last of these.) Now once you define one please explain an example of how this shaped your behavior as you were growing up. Scholars, To keep it interesting please try to avoid repeating the precise definition of someone who posted before you. If you wanted to teach a pet…perhaps a puppy…to perform a task(“SIT”) how would you begin? Can you compare and contrast the use and effectiveness of positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, and punishment in changing behaviors? What is a “primary reinforcer” and what is a secondary reinforcer? …

After reading about memory and intelligence, what is your most valuable tip for the class in improving your ability to remember things?  See the question above and please provide a tip to help improve memory of specific facts (as in information for psychology finals) …also see our text or find other information and explain why your method works  (see our text for help). Can you find any research (from a credible source) that teaches us more about memory and sleep? Why do people forget things? How much of it can be organic? How much of it can be psychological? Why do you remember what you needed at the grocery store, but forgot to get what another family member wanted? Most of us have heard of “intelligence tests” and the term “IQ” but what do we really understand about what it means to be smart?…

From your reading, you have seen that there are several theories of motivation. You may also sense that some of the theories may not specifically apply to you. Given that introduction, which theory of motivation is the best fit for describing your behavior? What motivates you? Can you define the satisfaction theory using a good source? What theorist is known for his or her development of this theory? So, since not everyone picks the same theory, indicating people are motivated by different rewards, what does that tell you about how you might manage and motivate others in the work place or in your family? If one theory does not fit all, what do you need to do as a manager? A parent? What is homeostasis and how does it affect motivation? According to motivation theory, how do low levels of arousal affect behavior efficiency? Why is this true?…
