From your reading, you have seen that there are several theories of motivation. You may also sense that some of the theories may not specifically apply to you. Given that introduction, which theory of motivation is the best fit for describing your behavior?

During Week 4, in this first Discussion Forum, we will review and discuss Motivation and Emotion as they relate to Terminal Course Objective

(Given a friend who is lacking drive to succeed, or a colleague who is going through varying levels of involvement in, and commitment to, his/her goals, analyze the situation with regards to the factors that influence existing motivational levels, and develop a framework for improving such motivational levels).

(Given a need to understand, explain, and interpret someone’s behavior, examine the development, structure, and functioning of personality and compare and contrast the major theories, including the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each approach).

Without looking at any reference material, define “Motivation”. In essence, what does motivation mean to you?

To me, motivation is the drive to get something done or accomplished.  The theories on motivation that relate to me are different depending on the activity involved.   For example, in reading about the drive-reduction theory, I related to the example in the text book of smoking.  I quit smoking cigarettes, but still like to have something in my mouth like a cigarette, so I have a vape cig.  Also, I relate to the arousal theory.  Ironically, just as the example described in the textbook, I might pick a fight with my husband because I am underaroused or bored.  I also go the opposite of picking a fight and try to come up with new activities to be involved in that are out of the ordinary for us…
