Psychological Research – 63 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc110-psychological-research-discussions/

The text gives seven major perspectives in modern psychology. These perspectives are based on observations of how people think, feel, and act. Select a perspective that you think best explains human behavior and evaluate it for strengths and weaknesses.

(Given a contemporary research question or issue in the social sciences, such as the question of whether obesity can be linked to mood and anxiety disorders, assess the key theoretical perspectives related to the problem or issue and select the perspectives that best address the problem or issue)

(Given an intellectual, scientific research question that investigates human behavior and mental processes, apply the empirical approach of the social sciences in order to define, analyze, and formulate answers that may support various solutions to the problem).

The cognitive perspective is a modern perspective in psychology that focuses on memory, intelligence, perception, problem solving, and learning. I believe peoples actions can be evaluated by the cognitive perspective.

Strength of the cognitive perspective is that it looks at thought processes which were ignored by other psychologists, especially behaviorists. Processes such as memory, attention and perception have been studied as they have an effect on our behavior.

A weakness of the cognitive perspective is that it is too mechanical; it compares the human to computers in that they have similar processes. This is a weakness as humans are more complex than computers, for example emotions can affect a humans’ output…

Biological Foundations – 51 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc110-biological-foundations-discussions/

An ongoing debate continues on the influence of nature and nurture on human behavior. If you had to argue that either genetics (nature) or environment (nurture) has the greater impact on human development, which would you pick and why?

This week we have two graded topic areas. In this second threaded discussion area we will review the Biological Perspective as it relates to Terminal Course Objective 3:

(Given any case involving possible biological causes for someone’s behavior, such as a substance abuse problem, brain injury, or unusual behavior, analyze the biological foundations of behavior and provide physiological explanations for changes in the person’s behavior, emotions, perceptions, and thoughts)

An on-going debate continues on the influence of nature and nurture on human behavior. If you had to argue that either genetics (nature) or environment (nurture) has the greater impact on human development, which would you pick, and why?

I believe both play vital roles in our lives but if I had to choose it would be environmental (nurture). Even though genetics are important part of who we are and where we come from our environment factors involves many dimensions. Environmental factors have different levels of impact on human development as they involve multiple layers of action, ranging from most immediate (families, friends, and neighborhoods) to bigger societal contexts (school systems and local governments) as well as macro factors such as politics on the international level or say global warming. These layers are also impacted by other factors outside them. For example, teenagers are exposed to not just peer pressure from their peers but also to parental ideals, community standards or ethnic views…

Sensation and Perception – 54 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc110-sensation-perception-discussions/

Sensation and perception are two different processes. Does sensory stimulus shape our perceptions? Do our perceptions misinterpret our sensations? How does that happen?

(Given a particular work or interpersonal situation, such as discussing with co-workers the problems within a department or talking to friends about the accuracy of an umpire’s call in a baseball game, describe the ways different people might perceive the same situation and indicate how perception may affect their beliefs about and reactions to the situation).

Let’s begin by responding to the following (also listed above):
1. Does sensory stimulus shape our perceptions?
2. Do our perceptions misinterpret our sensations?
3. How does 1 and 2 above happen? Please use concrete examples to help bolster your logic.

Sensory stimulus can shape our perceptions. We have special receptors in our sense organs which are our sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste. They send stimulus signals to the brain. Once these signals are received this could very well affect our perception. If I was at a carnival and purchased cotton candy for my children and myself when we look at the cotton candy we all might perceive its shape differently. I could think it looks like a cloud while they might see it as having a shape of an animal. Sometimes are perceptions can be wrong and throw our sensations off. Sometimes when we see something we expect it to be one thing when it is actually something else…

Consciousness – 58 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc110-consciousness-course-discussions/

How important is sleep to your overall functioning throughout the day? What are you doing to ensure that you get a good night’s sleep?

(Given a fellow student, family member, or employee who is having difficulty paying attention or is looking for ways to relax or become more self-aware, analyze the factors that affect consciousness, alertness, and self-awareness).

Let’s begin this discussion by responding to the following questions:

(1) How important is sleep to your overall functioning throughout the day?
(2) What are you doing to ensure that you get a good night’s sleep?

I had postpartum depression that lasted for over a year! I wasn’t sleeping, constantly worrying, would have episodes of crying, and a just over all feeling of down in the dumps. I was given medications and had a very good support system. My mother gave me the advice to sleep when my daughter was sleeping. It would help me to get every bit of rest while the opportunity was there. I would always find something that wasn’t done: the cleaning, cooking, taking a shower. I was always tired and nothing ever seemed to get done. I gave in eventually and started taking afternoon naps with my daughter. I felt so much better with the extra rest. My advice to new parents: there will always be an unfinished list, but your rest and health are more important! Sleep when your baby sleeps…

Learning – 57 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc110-learning-course-discussions/

After you have read about the theories of learning, reflect on how you learned as a child. What methods did your parents use to teach you how to act? Was it through classical conditioning? What about operant conditioning and social learning theory? Which theory had the biggest impact? Why? Give an example and state how it has impacted the person you are today.

(Given a task such as training a new employee in a specific job skill, encouraging more socially appropriate behaviors, or encouraging recall of previously learned information, apply the principles of learning to develop a plan for increasing desired behaviors and reducing or eliminating undesirable behaviors or for comprehending material)

(Given an individual who either struggles academically or maintains high academic achievement levels, assess the potential effectiveness of IQ tests or “culture fair” intelligence tests for indicating the reasons for the person’s performance)

In the first graded thread we are going to converse and have many insightful discussions on Classical Conditioning, Operant Conditioning, Cognitive Learning and Social Learning/Observational Learning.

What about operant conditioning? Which theory had the biggest impact? Why?; Give an example(s) and state how it has impacted the person you are today .

All – let’s continue this great momentum we have going in the course. The Week 1 and 2 threaded discussions have been excellent and I’m looking forward to an even better Week 3.

Infants can watch their parents to learn how to walk.  Also a few other things that infants can learn from watching their parents is talking, fussing, and how to react when others are holding them.  By the child crying or fussing they learn that the parent will come over and pay attention to them.  The infant can also learn hot to react when others are holding them by for example if the parents seem a bit hesitant in handing over their child then it maybe a possibility that they child will then cry…

Memory and Intelligence – 45 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-memory-and-intelligence/

We all seem to want a good memory (What are my coworkers names? Where did I leave my computer? What day was I supposed to submit that proposal to my boss?). These might be typical memory issues. After reading about memory and intelligence, what is your most valuable tip for the class in improving your ability to remember things?

This week our Terminal Course Objectives are 7 and 8. In this second graded threaded discussion area we will converse on the topics of (1) Memory; (2) Forgetting; (3) Biological Bases of Memory; (4) Memory Distortions; and (5) Intelligence.

Let’s begin by responding to the following (also shown above):

(1) After reading about memory, what is your most valuable tip for the class on improving your ability to remember things?

“Repetition” is central to Attention and Levels of Processing. Repetition “enriches encoding” because it increases attention and depth of processing.

Many of us forget where we put the car keys because we are typically in such a rush (and not paying attention) that “where we put the car keys” does not get encoded properly. Enriching the encoding process will improve memory. Without encoding there is no retrieval/memory.   Many students “study” their course material by reading over the content one time – this will result in very little encoding and depth of processing will be very shallow. This is why many students forget the course material when they become anxious in a testing environment. The “studied” material is fleeting because it has not entered Long Term Memory. In other words, “memory stores” (network of neurons that represent the learned material) have not been created…

Motivation and Emotion – 55 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-motivation-emotion/

From your reading, you have seen that there are several theories of motivation. You may also sense that some of the theories may not specifically apply to you. Given that introduction, which theory of motivation is the best fit for describing your behavior?

During Week 4, in this first Discussion Forum, we will review and discuss Motivation and Emotion as they relate to Terminal Course Objective

(Given a friend who is lacking drive to succeed, or a colleague who is going through varying levels of involvement in, and commitment to, his/her goals, analyze the situation with regards to the factors that influence existing motivational levels, and develop a framework for improving such motivational levels).

(Given a need to understand, explain, and interpret someone’s behavior, examine the development, structure, and functioning of personality and compare and contrast the major theories, including the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each approach).

Without looking at any reference material, define “Motivation”. In essence, what does motivation mean to you?

To me, motivation is the drive to get something done or accomplished.  The theories on motivation that relate to me are different depending on the activity involved.   For example, in reading about the drive-reduction theory, I related to the example in the text book of smoking.  I quit smoking cigarettes, but still like to have something in my mouth like a cigarette, so I have a vape cig.  Also, I relate to the arousal theory.  Ironically, just as the example described in the textbook, I might pick a fight with my husband because I am underaroused or bored.  I also go the opposite of picking a fight and try to come up with new activities to be involved in that are out of the ordinary for us…

Theories of Personality – 51 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc110-theories-personality-discussions/

Theories of personality are based on observations of how humans develop behavior patterns. Psychological testing assumes there are certain fixed aspects of human personality and those aspects can be identified through standardized measurements. As part of your application for a position, you may be administered one of these tests to determine if you are a good fit for the company. The Big Five personality trait assessment is in your Webliography. Take this assessment and comment on (1) its accuracy for you and (2) which of those traits may change over time.

In this second graded threaded discussion area, we will take an in-depth look at Personality by discussing how Personality Theories relate to Terminal Course Objective

First, in your own words, define the “Big Five” Theory of Personality O.C.E.A.N

Physical, Cognitive and Social Development – 55 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc110-physical-cognitive-and-social-development/

Human development is a process in which there are various cognitive, physical, social, and emotional milestones from conception to death, all of which require mastery. Our discussion begins with an exploration of physical development. All stages are essential for development, however, if you had to rank the importance of these physical stages, which would you rank as most important? Please provide an explanation to support your answer.

In the first graded thread in Week 5, we are going to converse and have many insightful discussions on Physical, Cognitive, Emotional, Personality, Social and Moral Development

(Given a child who is lagging in motor and language skills, an adolescent struggling with an identity crisis, or an older adult confronting issues related to retirement, assess how research on development and the major developmental theories might explain and help someone cope with these issues)

(Given a need to understand, explain, and interpret someone’s behavior, examine the development, structure, and functioning of personality and compare and contrast the major theories, including the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each approach)

Students who actively participate in the weekly threaded discussions tend to do extremely well on the weekly assignments. So as always, I expect to see everyone continue to work hard in the threads and reach their weekly posting requirements of 3 high value posts on 3 separate days starting no later than Wednesday of each week.

Next, answer the following questions: Human development is a process in which there are various physical, cognitive, emotional, personality, social, and moral milestones from conception to death, all of which require mastery. Our discussion begins with an exploration of physical development. All stages are essential for development, however, if you had to rank the importance of these physical stages [e.g., prenatal development or postnatal development (e.g., reflexes, motor, brain etc.], which would you rank as most important? Please provide an explanation to support your answer.

I believe that the more important development is the prenatal development. There are three stages to this development which are the germinal period, the embryonic period and the fetal period. All these stages are important but I feel that the embryonic period is the most critical. This period is from about two to eight weeks and is when the embryo begins to receive nourishment from the mother through the placenta. This is critical because this is when the embryo is vulnerable to diseases, drugs or any other toxins that pass from the mother through the placenta to the embryo. There are several things that can take place in these two to eight weeks like physical or structural problems can occur with the central nervous system or even the develop of the arms and the legs. They can only be affected during this period of development…

Sexuality and Gender – 47 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc110-sexuality-gender-discussions/

Understanding sexuality varies from culture to culture, yet there are basic biological, cognitive, and emotional components in sexuality and sexual development. A good starting point in understanding our topic this week will be to explore the issues of sexual identity and gender role. What is the difference between the two and what are some examples of sexual identity and gender roles?

In this second graded threaded discussion area for Week 5, we will explore the subjects of Sexuality and Gender

The difference between the two is that sexual identity is how a person thinks of themselves as far as who they are romantically or sexually attracted to. Sexual orientation is a person’s sexually attraction to the same sex or the opposite sex. Being gay, lesbian, bisexual or straight are all examples of sexual orientation. These are ways to determine what a person is attracted to by their sexually orientation…

Stress – 52 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-stress-course-discussions/

We are exploring the nature of stress, its effect on human functioning, and techniques to minimize stress. What is the biggest source of stress you have in your life? What is the most effective technique you have used to handle it?

This week we have two graded topic areas. In this first threaded discussion area we will review Stress.

(Given an account of a stressful personal or professional situation, identify the sources of the stress, evaluate the impact of the stressors, and identify several stress management techniques appropriate for the situation).

Let’s begin by responding to the following questions (also listed above):

  1. What is the biggest source of stress [stressor(s)] you have in your life?
  2. What is the most effective technique you have used to handle it?

As you know it takes everyone involved to create meaningful discussions so beginning this week, I would like to see each student respond to at least three other student posts in the threads. I look forward to reading your posts and your continued interaction with one another in the threads. Now let’s get started!

It’s interesting to find out the many different things that cause stress. Whether its a major or minor situation it can still cause stress. The stressor that I found interesting was the one that is imaginary. This seems to the picture we paint for ourselves what the outcome of a situation will be. I find myself doing this on many occasions. I have so much going on that sometimes if I’m trying to remind myself of something that needs to be done I’ll play out this scene in my mind what would happen if I don’t get it done. It becomes extremely stressful at times. I think I have an ongoing stressor in my life. This is the one that causes eustress which are the positive results of a situation that requires the body to change or adapt…

Social Psychology – 57 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc110-social-psychology-discussions/

Why is it that some people will blame others for their misfortunes yet excuse themselves of responsibility when they fail? Explain the fundamental attribution error and the self-serving bias and offer some suggestions as to how to avoid those errors.

In this second threaded discussion area we will explore and converse on “Social Psychology” [(1) Attribution Theory; (2) Attitudes (3) Conformity; (4) Obedience; (5) Group Processes; (6) Prejudice and Discrimination; (7) Interpersonal Attraction; (8) Aggression; and (9) Prosocial Behavior/Altruism]

(Given a situation depicting social influence, such as pressure to conform to a group, demands for obedience to an authority figure, or the persuasive effects of a commercial, assess the impact and extent of such influence on the behavior of those depicted and on people generally).

Let’s begin this discussion by having each of you define/explain “Attributions” in your own words.

Next, please respond to the following questions:

(1) Why is it that some people will blame others for their misfortunes yet excuse themselves of responsibility when they fail?
(2) Explain the fundamental attribution error and the self-serving bias/actor-observer bias and offer some suggestions as to how to avoid those errors.

Based on the tenets of Freud’s teachings, we often fall prey to these attributions because we have an innate need to protect our ego. As well, many of us have very short memories when it comes to our own thoughts/behaviors and often do not remember making these attributions, so we tend to repeat them. Finally (and this is something that some of you alluded to), many of us rarely introspect about what causes our own successes/failures or what might have caused the successes/failures of others…

Psychological Disorders – 56 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc110-psychological-disorders-discussions/

Despite the best efforts of psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical researchers, psychological disorders appear to be as prevalent today as they ever were—if not more so. What might be the cause of this phenomenon? Inadequate genetic makeup? Inadequate parenting? Inadequate social structures? What is different in our culture today than in previous generations? Please provide support for your opinion.

This week in our first graded threaded discussion area we will have many knowledge enhancing conversations on the topic of “Psychological Disorders”

(Given a need to understand, explain, and interpret someone’s behavior, examine the development, structure, and functioning of personality and compare and contrast the major theories including the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each approach).

(Given a situation pertaining to a person exhibiting abnormal or maladaptive thoughts/behaviors, analyze the possible biological and social causes of such behaviors, how they are diagnosed by mental health professionals, what type of treatment may be needed, and how society responds to people living with mental disorders).

In the sociocultural perspective of abnormality, abnormal thinking or behavior (as well as normal) is seen as the product of behavioral shaping within the context of family influences, the social group to which one belongs, and the culture within which the family and social group exist.  Living in a western culture things are always changing and progressing.  Family dynamics over the years have changed and so have social influences…

Theories and Therapy – 48 Pages

https://www.hiqualitytutorials.com/product/psyc-110-theories-therapy/

At some point in your life you may think you need therapy. At some point in your life, you may think a coworker or a family member needs therapy. Should you find yourself in that situation, which type of therapy would you recommend for another person or yourself: psychoanalysis, cognitive, humanistic, group, behavioral, or biomedical (medication or surgery)? Why? (If you would recommend no treatment for yourself or a coworker, please explain your rationale for this.)

This week in our second graded threaded discussion area we will have many discussion enhancing conversations on the topic of “Therapy”

Psychotherapy refers to all the diverse approaches used in the treatment of mental disorder and psychological problems. Additionally, there are three ways to conceptualize psychotherapy: (1) “Insight Therapy” involves pursuing increased insight regarding the nature of the client’s difficulty and sorting through possible solutions; (2) “Behavior Therapy” (a.k.a. “action therapy”) is based on the principles of learning, with behavior therapists working to alter maladaptive habits and change overt behaviors; and (3) “Biomedical Therapies” involve interventions to alter a person’s biological functioning…
