Sensation and perception are two different processes. Does sensory stimulus shape our perceptions? Do our perceptions misinterpret our sensations? How does that happen?

(Given a particular work or interpersonal situation, such as discussing with co-workers the problems within a department or talking to friends about the accuracy of an umpire’s call in a baseball game, describe the ways different people might perceive the same situation and indicate how perception may affect their beliefs about and reactions to the situation).

Let’s begin by responding to the following (also listed above):
1. Does sensory stimulus shape our perceptions?
2. Do our perceptions misinterpret our sensations?
3. How does 1 and 2 above happen? Please use concrete examples to help bolster your logic.

Sensory stimulus can shape our perceptions. We have special receptors in our sense organs which are our sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste. They send stimulus signals to the brain. Once these signals are received this could very well affect our perception. If I was at a carnival and purchased cotton candy for my children and myself when we look at the cotton candy we all might perceive its shape differently. I could think it looks like a cloud while they might see it as having a shape of an animal. Sometimes are perceptions can be wrong and throw our sensations off. Sometimes when we see something we expect it to be one thing when it is actually something else…
